Seminar on Prof. Safdar Sultan Islahi (R.A.)
On May 12, 2024, a one-day seminar was held at Idara-E-Tahqeeq-O-Tasneef-E-Islami to commemorate the services of the late Professor Safdar Sultan Islahi. More than 20 scholars participated and presented their valuable articles. From 2007 to 2017, Dr. Safdar served as the secretary of Idara Tahqeeq for ten years. During his tenure, many valuable works were accomplished within the institution, academic activities were expanded, construction projects were completed, and the institution's finances were stabilized.
The first session of the seminar started with the recitation of the Quran by Maulana Mahfoozur Rehman Nadvi. Amir Jamaat Syed Saadatullah Hussaini shared a video message, in which he said, "My relationship with Professor Safdar Sultan Islahi dates back to his initial association with the SIO. At that time, he was the General Secretary of the SIO. When Professor Safdar Sultan was appointed the secretary of the Idara Tahqeeq, he quickly understood the institution's challenges and dedicated himself to its development. He played an important role in the organization's growth through his management skills and continuous efforts."
While presenting the welcome speech, the secretary of the institution, Maulana Ashhad Jamal Nadvi said that the late Dr. Safdar's sincerity, dedication, and tireless effort towards the mission were commendable. He was deeply committed to making the process effective. His profound study of the Qur'an and Sunnah, motivational awareness, mujahid character, unwavering faith, good behavior with the brotherhood, understanding of matters, and sound judgment were notable. This revolutionary mujahid had a remarkable presence. Dawat, Jihad, Azimat, and Shahadat were the special subjects of his study. He worked diligently to improve the institution's system and provided resources for its development.
While delivering the keynote speech, Prof. Zafarul Islam Islahi said that Allah Almighty had endowed Dr. Safdar with various qualities, such as trustworthiness, honesty, commitment, and administrative ability. Additionally, he was an active activist with high moral standards. Prof. Zafarul Islam Islahi noted that one of Dr. Safdar's greatest virtues was his attitude toward critics; he regarded them as benefactors. When they pointed out a flaw or virtue, he would accept it graciously and show kindness to them.
Prof. Ayaz Ahmed Islahi, a long-time friend, wrote in his paper that his most prominent attribute was boldness, truth-telling, and boldly presenting the right thing, even if he had to suffer for it, but not by speaking the truth. They used to shy away and without caring about the blame of critic, they would present their words in moderation. Professor Dr. Ziauddin Falahi said that both speech and writing have a great role in the formation of human personality, and both of these skills were present in him.
Dr. Mohiuddin Ghazi said that Professor Safdar Sultan Islahi wrote about two personalities of Tehreek-e-Islami and provided some detailed accounts of Maulana Amin Ahsan Islahi and Maulana Sadruddin Islahi. These two figures, were active participants in the preparation of Islamic movement literature, offering some of the most original contributions.
Prof. Ishtiaq Ahmad Zilli expressed his relationship with the late Dr. Safdar and shed light on Dr. Safdar's knowledge and research skills, emphasizing his understanding of matters, the strength of his decisions, and his unpublished paper, "Maulana Abdul Bari Nadwi: Life and Services."
There were two sessions of the seminar in which eleven papers were presented. Among the topics discussed were the personal life of the Prophet, teaching services, administrative responsibilities in the university, relations with Tehreek-e-Islami, student activism, local services as Amir e Muqaami, relations with the Idara Uloomul Quran, service to the people, and an introduction to various writings and articles. In addition to these, notable essayists included Prof. Muhammad Sami Akhtar, Dr. Muhammad Ahmed Falahi, Dr. Arafat Zafar, Dr. Muhammad Shahabuddin Qasmi, Dr. Abu Saad Azmi, Maulana Muhammad Jurjees Karimi, Maulana Kamal Akhtar Qasmi, and Maulana Akhtar Sultan Islahi.
In addition to Prof. Ishtiaq Zalli, Prof. Naeem Ahmad Khan, Prof. Abu Sufyan Islahi, Prof. Muhammad Idris, Engineer Naseem Ahmed, and Dr. Razi-ul-Islam Nadvi were included in the presiding councils of both meetings. These gentlemen highlighted the merits and services of the deceased in their presidential speeches. In the end, Maulana Ashhad Jamal Nadvi, the secretary of the institution, expressed his gratitude, stating that Professor Safdar Islahi's personality was remarkable in itself, encompassing numerous abilities that were highlighted during the seminar. He emphasized the need to transfer this intellectual heritage to the next generations.
